Located at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains in Northern New Mexico, Taos Ski Valley is a world famous destination for riders and skiers of all ability levels. Taos is primarily know for its steeps but offers beginner & intermediate trails off the top of every single chair lift. For the advanced to expert skier/rider Taos offers some of the most challenging and varied terrain in the country, especially off its hike to ridges. The family vibe is also embodied in the quaint village of Taos Ski Valley. Not overdeveloped the resort offers a simple night life, lots of dining options, with everything in close proximity. Taos Ski Resort opens Thanksgiving Day and runs till Easter Sunday.
If you are not Skiing or Snowboarding there are many other activities in Taos Ski Valley to keep you occupied. Snowshoeing on the Carson National Forest trails is a great way to discover the beautiful high altitude views of Taos Ski Valley. Snow shoes can be rented at the local ski shops for the day. Big Al has a thrilling Snowmobile ride in his private property at over 11,000 feet in altitude. Spa services are offered at the Blake Hotel and the Edelweiss Lodge and Spa. Something unique would be to take a Cooking Class with Cooking Studio Taos!
The Village of Taos Ski Valley sits at 9,300 feet and is a refreshing escape from hot summer temperatures in neighboring states. The summer temperatures are at-least 10 degrees cooler than the Town of Taos so seldom exceeds 75 degrees. There is a plethora of things to do for the outdoor enthusiast. Hiking trails are plentiful with easy two mile hikes like the Williams Lake Trail or Summits to the Highest Peak in New Mexico, Wheeler Peak Trail. For a classic experience take a Horseback Trail ride or a Llama to Lunch! Mountain Bike trails are mainly for the more experienced riders or road bikers can tackle the ski valley road which is a gradual incline of 8 miles. All along the Rio Hondo River provides great fishing opportunities or just an opportunity to relax by the water.
Taos Ski Valley is home to a wide array of dining options. The Bavarian Restaurant at the base of Williams Lake Trail or Chair 4 in Winter is a must visit. This Restaurant is traditionally styled with the wait staff authentically clad in Bavarian dress. New additions are the modern Blake 192 offering year-round dining in style. The classic Norther New Mexican favorite is the Stray Dog Cantina which serves a wide variety of menu options. For supplies the Bumps Market offers package liquor and basic supplies. Black Diamond Coffee serves the best brews on the mountain. Whatever your tastes Taos Ski Valley will satisfy your needs.
Taos is located just 18 miles away from the Austing Haus and there is plenty of fun activities and experiences to be had. A Must Do is a visit to Taos Pueblo. This Unesco site has been inhabited for over 1,000 years by the Native Taos Pueblo Indians. The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is also on the Taos Bucket list and while there be sure to drive 3 miles further on to see the Greater World Earthship Community. The Town of Taos has many museums, galleries and cute unique shopping districts. The Enchanted Circle scenic byway is a 69 mile drive to the neighboring mountain communities.
